Kil2 Can and You Can Too! Part 2

EVE-Online-Myrmidon-Tech-Specs-Trailer_2

Kil2 can and so can you! Part 2

Its funny how the past catches up with you. Without fail and no matter what, skeletons will pop out of the closet and strangle you.

Of course I wasn’t thinking  of such things when I jumped into the gate camp nestled cozily in web and scram range around the far end of the PF-3 gate.  My mind was was focused solely on the cycling armor repairers,  picking a target to neutralize (capacitor wise), and managing drones. At this point, who was camping the gate and what they were camping in is immaterial; at about the time the first ship was locked, a fleet from the corporation Hail to the King arrived.

The campers must have noticed them on long scan well in advance of their arrival, because I had been pumping my fist in the air with enthusiasm as the greatly superior force I was fighting, star bursted in all directions, disappearing off of the grid. I thought, for a small second, that these campers were scared to fight a Myrmodon. I was wrong when the first set of Lokis arrived, followed by broadswords, cyclones, and Vexor Navy Issues.

I decided to stay and fight, as hopeless as that was. After watching my armor repairers turn bright red, and seeing huge gaps in where my armor should be, I decided that this was not a fight I wanted to take. I recalled drones and burned back to the gate. Once the aggression timer was complete, I jumped out of the fire, and into the net of High Sec safety. Or so I thought.

PF-386 borders the High Sec system of Orvolle. When the jump tunnel collapsed, and the Cretans of Hail to the King were far behind me,  I reveled in the sight of concord ships floating around the gate. Spending the last 2 years in Lowsec, Concord isn’t an organization I was used to seeing, so I spent a good minute staring at the unique ships. I managed to repair my armor, I had one XL capacitor booster left, and reloaded my ammunition. Then, the gate flashed. Hail to the King jumped through.

I only really engaged a single ship, so I didn’t think anything of it. While waiting for a move to be made, something tickled the back of mind. That something happened to be the recollection of one of many capsuleers being podded during my time as a pirate… and of course… the kill rights associated with such reckless destruction. Before I could react, Hail to the King activated a kill right on my Myrmidon.

I’d like to say I fought the good fight. I’d like to say I took a few ships out with me. Oh I’d like to say that, but, the fight was one sided. Hail to the King 1, Yanowski  0. I was simply too relaxed and unprepared to take the fight in Highsec, I was out of ammunition, and capacitor boosters. I tried to jump back to Null, but they burned through my tank and sent my pod on its merry way (in tact, mind you). All the while, my hand was shaking. For anyone that has quit tobacco,  only to start up again, knows of the head rush associated with nicotine coursing back into a purged system. Stepping up to a new class of Solo PvP gave me that same head rush, same shakiness.

Failed, but content in the story I just created, I went back to the station and fit another Battle Cruiser. I’ll try fountain this time. I turned up the volume on another Bringing Solo Back episode, undocked, and pointed my ship to the west.

Jason’s Salvation

If you’ve heard the name Jason Skjegstad, please raise your hand.

Not a lot.

If you’ve heard the name FrFrmPukin, raise your hand.

There’s a few more.

FrFrmPukin (Pukin for short) has been a strong motivation in the EVE Online podcast community for quite some time. He’s a prominent member in the LI3 Alliance and one of the driving forces behind the Multiplex Gaming Site. He has helped perspective podcasters and bloggers get their start and is a host on the Podside podcast.

And, he needs some help.

Jason is a US. Vet waiting to get his V.A. benefits and is experiencing some health issues and has racked up some medical debt while waiting for the benefits to kick in. I met Jason at the recent Minnesota Meet-Up that he organized in early December and had an awesome time. He is charismatic and a lot of fun to talk to (and have a few beers with). Despite that particular evening being cold as hell, I have never regretted attending my first Meet-Up with Pukin and the great group of guys that showed up.

There is a fundraiser that has been started to help keep him going until his benefits start and it’s located at https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/gl24/jason-s-salvation?utm_source=giveforward&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=supporter_thank_gift&hid=3824039&cid=3046869. If you have a few extra bucks and can afford a donation, I would suggest plopping into the site and making a pledge. Every little bit helps!

Thanks all!

Kil2 can, and you can too! Part One.

EVE-Online-Myrmidon-Tech-Specs-Trailer_2

Eve Online is an ever changing, morphing blob of an MMO, and it’s on a very rare occasion that I’ll glance over my shoulder in the direction of media content that “no longer applies”. Ship fittings change, mechanics change, priorities change, and as the lifecycle of Eve Online plods onward, the media of New Eden either stays abreast of the change, or sinks into the depths of outdated irrelevance. Podcasts are extremely susceptible to this phenomena. On High Drag for instance, I don’t think we’ll see anyone listening to episode 3 for a pre crucible ship fitting or going back to an ancient Fly Reckless episode to track down the “then” upcoming changes to walking in stations. Most Podcasts tip their hats to a certain topic then move on, like strangers passing in an alley, and in the same aspect,  Podcast listeners do the same.

Like the English language, there are of course, exceptions to the rule. Bringing Solo back is that exception.

I originally stumbled upon Kil2’s foray into Podcasting after he announced it on one of his youtube videos.  During that time, the notion of PvP entertained me through countless hours of not knowing any better… and mining asteroids. For those of you who are unaware, Kil2 is now known as CCP Rise and coupled with CCP Fozzie, make up a voltron like team of spaceship saviors. All gushing aside, Kil2s Podcast: Bringing Solo Back is absolutely timeless, and worthy of entry into the Eve Online Hall of Fame. (Well now, that is an interesting idea isn’t it. We have monuments in game and out, so, hows about an in game New Eden Hall of Fame?) The Moniker of timeless sticks to Bringing Back Solo particularly well because the cast focuses on decisions that are made during stressful times…

And making decisions under stress, is what EvE PVP is all about. Fittings change, but the ability to make a decision while hands are shaking, and a solo ship is hopelessly  outnumbered in space, remains constant.

While digging into the Bringing Solo Back archives, I noticed that the majority of fights that Kil2 talked about centered around the Battle Cruiser class of ships.  Up until recently, battle cruisers were a bit of a specter to me. They have a horrendous align time, the DPS can be outdone by T1 cruisers, and they would surely not last long in W-space, Nullsec, or Lowsec. Everything about this bloated, slow class, screamed to me  “move along, nothing to see here.” But listening to Kil2 talk about some decisions in a solo Drake fight sparked something in my imagination. Maybe it was time to change.

I had been in a bit of a rut. I managed to kill Zao Amadues’ Wolf with a mere T1 Incursus, and while riding high, managed to lose quite a bit of assets to some careless pod piloting. Lowsec was becoming tedious and I had begun bouncing between Aideron Robotics and Fintarues’ own Rifterlings. (Both are fantastic organizations).  Good fights were few and far between, attitudes were grating my nerves, and my decisions in frigate combat were reduced to “do I take that fight, or not”.  On the verge of moving on (again) from Eve Online, I sold everything I owned, and bought a series of myrmidons.

After fitting the ships, balancing tank, bolstering capacitor, and undocking, I set course for Syndicate. (Syndicate is a null region in space prowled by Serpentis, home to Brave Newbies, and is now one of the most crowded areas of Nullsec).  If I was going to find a fight, it would be there.

Holding my breath, I came to PF-346, and jumped. I knew what was coming, but even so, Battle Cruiser combat is fundamentally different than frigate / cruiser combat. Without fail, I jumped right into a gate camp.

Next up. Part Two.
